The Fantastically-Surreal Art of Rafael Silveira

robofrenteverso

It was quite a difficult task for me to pick only a few select images from Rafael Silveira’s portfolio. His paintings and illustrations are that good!

A lot of his works are phantasmagorical in nature. His acrylic and oil paintings, he says, “mixes a classical atmosphera with contemporary techniques and subjects.” And indeed, popular cartoon characters rub shoulders with pin-up-esque femme fatales, and his subjects exist in a lush, symbolically-rich world of their own.

The Collage Artworks of Irina and Silviu Szekely

irina_and_silviu_szekely1

Irina and Silviu Szekely are two exciting UK-based artists, whose collaborative surrealist paper collages were inspired and influenced by diverse sources, including, but not limited to the works of Dada, “Encyclopaedia Acephalica, the writings of Benjamin Péret, Duchamp, Foucault, Bataille, or Julio Cortázar, to name just a few.”

We are a team of two emerging artists working towards Meta-real / Pseudo-DaDa directions that allow us to create traditional collages/assemblages/photo montages that one might find thought provoking and aesthetically incisive.  We chose collage because it gives us the possibility to remove an object from its original space allocated once and for all in a definitive reproduction (photography, printed images, etc.) and to place it in a whole different environment in order to produce alternative visual and conceptual behaviours with parallel functionalities.

A closer inspection of the works of the two Romanian-born artists, reveals the masterful composition and skilled technique behind them. These are not your average collages, they have enough depth and perspective to entice us to take a peek inside.

Tom Samui’s Sculptures Made From Recycled Automobile Parts

Tom-Samui-sculpture_recycled_metal_dinosaur

Artist Marco Mahler, whose works I’ve featured on JazJaz before, on Swiss artist Tom Samui, the Switzerland-based artist and creator of these fantastic and ginormous custom sculptures:

He (Samui) and his team have been perfecting these sculptures over the last ten years. Once a month they go to a junk yard and cart away a truckload of old car and motorcycle parts. The pieces are cleaned and sorted by type; nothing is thrown away. All pieces are welded together, polished and varnished with special anti-rust lacquer. It takes about 400 hours of work to complete a large sculpture.

Samui undertakes custom orders based on the client’s drawings, photographs, models, or even just an idea. The production time for the custom pieces is between two to three months.

Visit here to see more of his art.
