The Orphanage (El Orfanato) was one of most successful and critically acclaimed movies of the year 2007, in Spain. The film is basically a horror movie at heart, but its poignant and emotional storyline sets it apart from the standard, mind-numbing ‘hack and slash’ fare, churned out with clinical efficiency by Hollywood.
The movie was directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, and produced by Guillermo Del Toro, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy and the upcoming Hellboy 2. The Orphanage has been chosen by Spain as its official nominee for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
The movie is expected to hit U.S. screens on December 28, 2007.
