Three Amigos - Oil Painting by Brent Estabrook

Far too many of us have sacrificed our dreams on the altar of harsh reality. It’s hard out there for anyone, and even more so for a creative person to follow their dreams. But, it’s heartening to know that there are always a brave few who never give up and keep fighting.

American artist Brent Estabrook, who despite being a qualified dentist (with a large school debt), decided to give it all up and began to chase his love of painting. He went through some difficult patches — which included spending an year sleeping on an air mattress in a studio apartment shared with other people — but he never once stopped painting during that period.

“I have given up a life of comfort and dullness to pursue a life of uncertainty and excitement… All I know is that I need to paint… that is it.” – Brent

His latest series of oil painting “Perpetual Recess,” was inspired by his pursuit of the internal passions which drive us in the face of overwhelming odds. The playful series, tinged with nostalgia, takes us back to our childhoods where we were free to dream without any of the fears which hold us back now. Using an impressionistic style of painting, Brent has masterfully used colors, contrast and textures to create his works. The effect is quite stunning as the paintings looks photorealistic when viewed from a distance.

Brent Estabrook was born in the year 1985 in Arizona, but spent most of his life in Seattle. He graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona, before getting a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Louisville. He is currently based in San Francisco, and has had his works exhibited at numerous exhibits in America.

MONEYLESS, UNTITLED, ETNA, 2016.

Triscele’ is an art project “created, curated and performed by” artists STEN LEX (previously on JazJaz), Martina Merlini and Moneyless. The word ‘Triscele’ is a motif representing three bent human legs (or three curved lines), and is known to be an ancient symbol of Sicily. The union of three diverse artistic styles of the artists led the group to choose the word as the name of the project.

Snip from the project website:

Triscele will be a journey of a group of artists looking for a connection with the Sicilian landscape and a contact with the time and history that nature holds and tells through its outlines. The artists will create graphic overlappings to recall the Sicilian landscape, blending past and present, an artist with the other in order to produce unique works as unique was the symbolism of the Triscele.

The group traveled through the island of Sicily for one month, and visited remote locations and crowded cities to create their works. Starting from the streets in the district of San Berillo, Catania, they moved to the rugged, volcanic landscape surrounding Mount Etna which formed a incongruous backdrop to their contemporary art. The second part of the project took them to the city of Ragusa where they continued to find abandoned locations for the project.

With her subversive photo series ‘ANIMALCOHOLICS,’’ photographer Frieke Janssens humorously tackles society’s casual acceptance of alcohol and the regressive animal-like behavior which rears its ugly head once people are drunk. The result is a “large, surrealist panorama in which she takes alcohol out of its human context, capturing imagined animals in a state of intoxication that one might see in a bar.”

Based in Brussels, Belgium, Frieke Janssens has had a love affair with photography starting at an young age. She creates arresting visual narratives with her images which grab hold the interest of the viewer. Despite being quite busy doing commercial work for numerous creative agencies and corporations, Jannsens finds the time for her personal projects with a sociological angle.

You can find more of her photography on her site and Facebook page.
